In the 30th years of the twentieth century in the territory of Central Asia and Transcaucasia the unusual animal lived which has become famous for the bright red color of wool. Turonian tiger has glorified the Turgai woods across all Central Asia. However it has been in the seventies officially recognized that he has disappeared as a species because of destruction of his habitat. The last time of the Transcaucasian tiger was seen in the delta of Amu Darya in 1957. But now in Kazakhstan the program of reintroduction of this animal near Lake Balkhash is actively discussed. How much will cost its revival, what else needs to be undertaken for successful implementation of the program, in survey material of the of BNews.kz correspondent.
Last time the Turonian tiger was seen in 1954 in Tajikistan. The main reason for its disappearance it is seen in violation of the habitat of the animal. Those years Tajikistan actively developed territories in the south of the republic where there were tygai woods, - places of its dwelling. The woods turned into fields for a cotton. From 90 thousand hectares of the tygai woods in the 30th years to the 50th there were only 24 thousand. Now the cotton in these territories is almost not grown up, fields stand naked – the soil is salted, and nothing will grow on it. The place where last time saw the Turonian tiger in Tajikistan, is the reserve "Tigrovaya Balka" in two hundred kilometers from Dushanbe.
These impassable thickets were the ideal habitat for the Turonian tiger. The animal was extremely careful, and avoided the neighbourhood with the people. The local population didn't even approach tygai thickets because of fear of a tiger, and wild animals who lived in the inundated woods near this predator didn't suffer because of the person. There was a natural process until the person has interfered with it.
Scientists have proved that he is genetically very close to Amur tiger which belongs to endangered species now. Experts consider that he can be delivered to Kazakhstan, and to try to restore the died-out population.
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) of Russia has acted as the initiator of the project, and Kazakhstan has supported the idea. As a result two years ago the program for reintroduction of the Turonian tiger in the territory of Central Asia has been developed.
Joint researches have shown that the delta of the Ili river to the south from Lake Balkhash is suitable for revival of subspecies. It is 500 thousand hectares which are wildlife areas of national park the "Altyn Emel". At the moment as priority actions creation of a food supply for tigers in the next 5-7 years is planned. For this purpose it is necessary to deliver on the territory of future reintroduction about 50-60 Bukhara deer annually.
According to the expert. participating in the project from the republic – the vice-president of the Kazakhstan National Geographic Society, the deputy director for science of the Kazakhstan association of preservation of a biodiversity, the zoologist Sergey Sklyarenko, the Turonian tiger is subspecies. Genetically all existing races of a tiger are close, capable to be crossed, give prolific posterity among themselves. As the Turonian tiger is very close to Amur, for his restoration it is quite quite possible to deliver the Amur tigers. However for implementation of the program it is necessary to create a number of the accompanying conditions.
"To bring a tiger is the easiest that can be in this case. Objectively. They are animals not that weak – will be brought not kittens, and rather adult animals... The most difficult is a restoration of an ecosystem. This restoration, first, is tygai wood. It is in a bad condition and that it has begun to be restored, it is necessary to provide normal water inflow, to reduce consumption by farms, there losses about 50%, water is spent dullly. It is necessary to fight against the fires, against illegal cutting, against a pasture of the cattle which eats there everything that is forbidden, but it is grazed there. The second essential moment is a food supply. About 50-60 boars are necessary to one tiger a year. At present the density of hoofed animals is about 10 times lower. Number of roe and goitered has to rise. Ideally there still it is necessary to translate the Bukhara deer. And in order that to take out a deer on Ili where for him ideal places, it is necessary to adjust protection. And here the chain has gone – one without another is impossible," S. Sklyarenko told.
According to preliminary estimates, for the first ten years of works on revival of a look in Kazakhstan 50 million dollars are required.
"Donors, it seems, promise 10 million dollars. It seems, money and, seemingly, rather big. But if to do something like that seriously, in scales of the country money are not that very big. But here the same is my favourite subject – Kok-Zhaylyau: there at the first stage only for infrastructure it was planned to spend about 700 million dollars. There now, compare scales. That is the state in principle was, morally, ready to throw out such money only for infrastructure. That is for the state these 10 million dollars it in general anything," the interlocutor of the agency noted.
